AND

THE EVENT DELETED!!!!!!!!???

DELETED: Event us b000fi8j

== EVENT DELETED NOTIFICATION ==

***This event has been deleted after review by a seismologist.***

Geographic coordinates: 12.809N, 90.694W
Magnitude: 5.5

Time near the Epicenter: 10 Mar 2013 10:18:17

Location with respect to nearby cities:

Can anybody guess or explain how and why such things happen?

i have received both mail from USGS EXACTLY 1 hR AND 01 MINUTES APART

QUESTIONS ARE
1)HOW AND WHY SUCH ERRORS OCCUR?
2)WHY DOES IT TAKES ONE HOUR TO RECOGNIZE THE ERROR?
3)FIRST THINK,HOW SUCH A BIG QUAKE OF 5.5+ CAN BE MISJUDGED?
4) IT IT IS A COMPUTER OR SOFTWARE ERROR ,HOW WE CAN TRUST SUCH SOFTWARE?
5)LAST BUT NOT LEAST
HOW CAN SEISMOLOGISTS IN GENERAL AND USGS IN PARTICULAR DEMANDS FROM
THOSE(LIKE ME )WORKING IN THE FIELD OF PREDICTION TO PREDICT EXACT MAGNITUDE(+ OR -0.3),THAT TOO BEFORE IT HAS OCCURRED?

I WOULD LIKE USGS AND /OR SEISMOLOGIST TO ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS

Amit;

Preliminary locations are done by computer and the program is not as good as the human eye.

Once a person examines the records such mistakes are corrected.

It is not only the quesrion of location.The complete event of 5.5 quake,seems to be deleted by USGS ,which is rare and surprising

Amit;

When an event is deleted entirely it was not a quake.

Seismometers record ground movement and that can be caused by many thing beside earthquakes.

Computers are not as good at recognizing patterns as humans. It's also possible that other stations did not record the event.

My problem still remains
1) what else can move the ground to the tune of 5.5 magnitude?
Still surprising is ----the USGS Quaake details still shows the same quake,which is supposed to be deleted?!!!!

How come this anomaly?

You asked what can move the ground to Mag 5.6, Answer nothing (or a nuke), but signal drop can make a seismometer trace THINK there is an event.

My post here explains some of the reasons why events can apparently occur and then be deleted.

The particular event you refer to has NOT been deleted. Whilst you can no longer see it on USGS you can still see it on EMSC and on GFZ Potsdam

Quite often USGS events get deleted and reinstated, especially if the change networks from pt (Pacific tsunami) to us - The main USGS network. You will then get a deletion on one and reinstatement on the other.

Amit;

earlier you asked what could move the earth as much as a 5.5 mag quake.

The answer is ME! by stomping on the ground near a seismic array.

Seismometers don't know where the energy is coming from so readings from other seismometers are used for location purposes, thus the array. If the person reading the records was careless enough, he might mistake the readings for a distant event and the magnitude would go up accordingly. Unlikely but not impossible.
